From mattresses to plants, a new generation of entrepreneurs have imbued fresh design, sustainability, internet marketing, and technological innovation into age-old industries. The latest to get a revamp: kitchenware. From matte finishes to pretty details, the new breed of direct-to-consumer brands not only entice millennial cooks buying Dutch ovens on Instagram but anyone looking for a functional beautiful kitchen gear refresh.

Today’s review: Milo Cookware by Kana Lifestyle

It took a global pandemic to finally teach me that a Dutch oven is indispensable. Prior to the virus outbreak, I owned two: a Staub and Le Creuset, both of which had carried me through many New York winter dinners of braised meats and stews. However, I learned to bake serious bread during multiple COVID-related lockdowns, a delicious and therapeutic activity that had me reaching for a Dutch oven 3-4 times a week as I experimented with boules. For this, I needed a smaller size. I turned to the Milo Mini Dutch Oven I had seen advertised on Instagram.

As with other contemporary brands, Kana Lifestyle appeals to younger cooks through its design-forward products, range of colors and finishes, and accessible price points. Milo Cookware, a Kana Lifestyle subsidiary, began as a small cast iron cookware start-up in California in 2017.

I reached out to Kana Lifestyle and received one Dutch Oven Mini in a gorgeous emerald green plus a 10” Ultimate Skillet.

Living in a 2-person household, I discovered the Mini to be the perfect size for weekday meals. It’s also the perfect volume for smaller bread loaves. Given I was testing (and eating) a lot of hot buttered carbs, I was excited to pare down my dough recipes and calories.

At 3.5 quarts of capacity, the Mini may be smaller than the 5.5 quart Classic, but it weighs a substantial 8.5 lbs. That weight, of course, comes from its cast iron core. The exterior is finished in gloss enamel while the interior is black satin enamel. The lid has a gold stainless steel knob: a simple detail that gives the piece a luxe look.

I took my Mini on a spin through several loaves of bread. Heat retention, one of the key aspects of baking in a Dutch oven, seemed as reliable as my other pieces. Loaves came out with a perfectly …….
